The Menzies Institute for Medical Research developed this Preventing Stroke MOOC (massive open online course) with the aim of improving our understanding and awareness of stroke. The course has been co-designed with the involvement of people with lived experience of stroke, health professionals and researchers.

Research shows substantially less disability and suffering caused by stroke across our communities is possible. A randomised controlled trial has also shown that this course can improve your knowledge of stroke, an important step towards reducing the numbers of strokes in our community.

In this course we cover the latest research in identifying who is at risk of stroke and what can be done to manage risk factors to reduce the incidence of first-ever or subsequent stroke. This course will also cover what to do if you or someone you are with is having a stroke. “Time is brain” is often quoted to emphasise the need to act quickly to receive hospital care as soon as possible to limit damage to the brain.

Preventing Stroke is suited to everyone – whether you or a family member has had a stroke; whether you are generally interested in cardiovascular health; you might be an allied health professional; clinician; aged care or disability service provider; or health policy professional – this course is designed to be accessible and appealing to people from diverse backgrounds.

The course consists of six modules:

  • Introduction to preventing stroke
  • What is stroke and living with stroke
  • Signs of stroke and stroke treatment
  • Stroke statistics
  • Risk factor for stroke, and
  • Actions to take to reduce the risk of stroke

We estimate the course takes around eight hours to complete. You can do the course all at once, or take your time, returning to the course whenever it suits you. After you’ve started the course, we’ll send periodic reminder emails to you for the next 8 weeks, encouraging you to complete all the modules.
